one artist who i have particularly inspirational in recent months is tessa farmer..

“tessa’s work has seen her creating vignettes portraying tiny insect-like fairies in their natural habitat, as they harvest the corpses of dead carrion and defend their territories against swarms of hornets. the fairies themselves owe nothing to the disney studios, but rather are the earthy substance of medieval folklore.”

the artist recreates her fairies using the bodies, legs, heads and wings of dead insects she has found. in the image below, the size comparison between the bee and the faerie should give indication of just how intricate these constructions are.
